Red Tails, a highflying, rollicking action adventure film inspired by the legendary Tuskegee Airmen, was produced by Lucasfilm LTD and released in 2012. To support the company’s marketing and publicity efforts, Farinella wrote the Red Tails Production Notes, Media Kit, Ambassador Kit, and Corporate Pitch Kit, along with a ghost-written article published in Boulé Journal.
Red Tails was a labor of love for executive producer George Lucas, who carefully assembled the best writers, directors and post production crews to bring this story to life. Anthony Hemingway directed the film that featured a star-studded ensemble cast lead by Cuba Gooding Jr., Terrence Howard, Nate Parker, and David Oyelowo.
The first deliverable was an article written on behalf of Lynn Swann for the Boulé Journal, the publication of record for the legendary Sigma Pi Phi fraternity.
The article — written after interviewing Mr. Swann and Tuskegee Airman Dr. Roscoe Brown — told the story of how Swann discovered the man who was his dance teacher served with the Tuskegee Airmen during World War II. Click here to read the story.
The Production Notes portion of the assignment began by interviewing the film’s principals, including Hemingway, producers Chas. Floyd Johnson and Rick McCallum, writer Aaron McGruder, composer Terence Blanchard and post production crewmembers such as Ben Burtt and Matthew Wood.
We also interviewed much of the cast, including Nate Parker, David Oyelowo, Tristan Wilds, Michael B. Jordan, and Andre Royo.
Perhaps the biggest thrill, though, was speaking at length with Tuskegee Airman Dr. Roscoe Brown, who served in the 332nd Fighter Group during World War II.
The challenge then was to turn those interviews, and additional research, into a cohesive book about the film’s genesis, inspiration, and execution.
While the Production Notes were the primary deliverable, Lucasfilm also asked that any content be flexible to be used on the film’s website.
The Media Kit was a simplified version of the Production Notes. The Ambassador and Corporate Pitch kits were created to help Lucasfilm pitch civic organizations to screen Red Tails and business to sponsor events.
